Greeting patients and staff with its uplifting message, the mobile, “Blessings on the Wing,” fullfills its design goals day after day. Paying homage to the white branches of the sycamore tree against the blue sky and leaves in the wind is the inspiration behind this piece.
Boone Hospital Center sought Sonya Bird's help in bringing nature inspired healing art to its new Nifong Medical Plaza. The mobile measures 14 feet tall by 10 feet wide at the top tapering down to 6 feet wide at the bottom and is comprised of 400 origami cranes. Curly willow branches painted to resemble sycamore branches make the framework of the piece allowing each level of the mobile just enough movement.
Reminiscent of "a gentle breeze in the trees," commented one viewer. "Look up and breathe," another enthusiastic viewer proclaimed.

A wall installation of 77 origami cranes spans 19 feet. The crane's message of hope and healing brings reassurance to hospital visitors, patients, and staff alike. Map paper provides familiar colors and patterns for the viewer. Bird shaped shadows add another dimension to the piece.
The site specific work was created at the request of Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Missouri for the new patient tower at their flagship campus in 2011.

A flock of 125 origami cranes under a framework of cane and jute greets visitors entering Peace Haven International. Designed by Nicholson and produced with the students of the C.A.R.E. Gallery in Columbia, Missouri.
